DJ Spooky to Present 'Rebirth of a Nation' at next Wooster Forum Event
|
|  DJ Spooky, a.k.a. "That Subliminal Kid," will present "Rebirth of a Nation," an audio/visual remix of D.W. Griffith's 1915 pro-segregation movie, "The Birth of a Nation," at the next Wooster Forum event on Thursday, Sept. 28, at The College of Wooster. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held in McGaw Chapel (340 E. University St.), beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Nafisi: “Society cannot live without creating spaces for imagination and literature”
|
|  Azar Nafisi, the acclaimed author of Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, opened the 2006 Wooster Forum last night with a passionate defense of the importance of great works of literature. “Society cannot live without creating spaces for imagination and literature,” she told several hundred students, faculty and local residents. “No amount of political correctness is going to cause you to empathize with another. It is only through the eyes of imagination.”

Emerson String Quartet to Open 22nd Season of Wooster Chamber Music Series
|
| The Wooster Chamber Music Series will open its 22nd season with a performance by members of the Emerson String Quartet and Wu Han, pianist, on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m. in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.). The group, which will be making its 19th appearance in the series, will present Mozart's Divertimento for String Trio in E Flat Major, K 563, and Brahams' Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, op. 25. Admission is $10 for general seating and $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the Wilson Bookstore in Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.) and at Maurer Pharmacy (1827 Cleveland Rd.).

Local supporters and alumni celebrate renovation of Kauke Hall
|
|  More than 300 community members and Wooster alumni from Wayne and Holmes counties turned out Thursday night to celebrate completion of the renovation of Kauke Hall, the college’s largest academic building and a campus icon since 1902.

Kim Tritt to Discuss the Power of Pilates at First Faculty at Large Lecture
|
|  The College of Wooster will open its Faculty at Large fall lecture series with a look at the power of Pilates when Kim Tritt, professor of theatre, presents "Pilates: Fact, Fusion, and Fundamentals," on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. in Freedlander Theatre (329 E. University St.). Tritt will discuss Joseph Pilates, classical Pilates technique, and the significance of Pilates to the German tradition of modern dance and American dancers. All in attendance will be invited to experience the eight fundamental principles of Pilates, which will be modified to suit individual needs. Participants are asked to wear loose pants and a comfortable shirt. They should also bring a thick towel or mat.

Zachery Williams to Speak at Opening Africana Studies Seminar Sept. 12

|  Zachery Williams, assistant professor of history at the University of Akron, will present "What's Masculinity Got to do with It?" at the first Africana Studies Seminar of the fall semester on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at The College of Wooster. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Room 119 of Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.) beginning at 11 a.m.

Recycled Percussion Ready to Rattle the Rafters at Wooster
|
|  Recycled Percussion, a four-man pulse-pounding power group, will rattle the rafters of McGaw Chapel (340 E. University St.) with its unique brand of "junk rock" on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. at The College of Wooster. The band, which features a DJ and three drummers who turn recycled and salvaged items into choreographed percussion, has become one of the most popular touring shows in the country. Tickets for the Wooster show are $5 (cash only) and can be purchased at the door that evening.

Best-Selling Author Azar Nafisi Opens 2006 Wooster Forum
|
|  Iranian-born professor and internationally acclaimed author Azar Nafisi will open The College of Wooster's 2006 Forum series with a discussion of her best-selling book Reading Lolita in Tehran on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in McGaw Chapel (340 E. University St.). The 2006 Wooster Forum series, titled "Piety and Heresy: Conforming to and Transcending One's Culture," is free and open to the public.
